We live in an era where Technology has become the Trend. Most people can hardly go by their daily activities without using or experiencing one of the glories of technology. Technology is like the biggest thing right now and we are constantly looking for new opportunities to make it even bigger or better.
The question of how girls or ladies can serve as development drivers led to so many questions popping within my head. I began to ask myself questions like "what are the unique qualities or perculiarities of female engineers and technicians?, " "What are the advantages of having ladies in Engineering companies?", "what are the key roles female engineers and technicians play in the field of technology ", is there something missing in the field of technology given that the percentage of girls in Technology is on the the lower side of the scale?". Finding the answers to all these questions brought my consciousness to the fact that there is something missing in the quality of Technology that is being delivered to our communities. Once you have a gender imbalance and only males in the group, you don't have the same quality of innovation and creativity and it becomes less harmonious.
There are some innovations which have led to the death of women and children simply because women were not part of these development teams. An example of this is the safety air bag technology in cars which was meant to save lives (men, women and children) but because of the absence of girls in those teams their use cases were based on an average male and most women do not fit within the description /characteristics of an average male and these led to their deaths. Without women on the team, men are not going to have the same insights to design products that truly work for women. I am not saying that all "MEN" made technologies are not inclusive but we need to collaborate to make it better.
So when we talk of women serving as BETTER development drivers, we are actually talking about how women can contribute in the production of more quality products and innovations that are being released in our communities. The one way I know that girls can do this is for them to BELONG and to take part in the key processes of the innovations we release into the market. This will increase the quality of the products since it was built putting into consideration both genders. You may be wondering how you can be part of key Innovation teams.
- You need to prove yourself capable and of doing the job. Nobody will let you into their team simply because you are a lady. You need to be qualified for the job.
- You need to have the mind for what ever you are doing. It is not all about being able to do the job. It's more than that.
- You need to create good networks with your friends and colleagues.
- You need to have a voice and it has be heard.
- You need to be open minded.
Women are naturally detailed and so there are alot of loop holes you can spot. So before you conclude that your idea is stupid, say it out loud until you beleive it is the best idea yet. Just look around you and see how you can make things better. Better is bigger
